An elderly couple who was faced with losing their home to foreclosure because of a mail mix up got the news that they can now stay in the place they have called home for more than 40 years.
The Wongs thanked News 12 for helping them get to keep their house.
“Because of you Channel 12 news, you were able to save the house from going into foreclosure,” says Mrs. Wong. “If it wasn’t for you guys, we would be in deep trouble.”
Mr. Wong, who suffers from dementia, never opened up mail from a third-party company that took over his mortgage payments from his bank. The family didn’t think to redo his autopay so that the new bank would have authorization. That led to the new bank saying it was going to foreclose on the home.
Simone Wong, who grew up in the home with her two siblings, called Team 12 Investigates after three years of fighting the bank with her parents.
The Wongs had the money to pay in full, but the bank wouldn’t allow it.
Citibank declined to comment, but the other bank, Cenlar, said the Wong’s allegations are without merit. Cenlar offered to waive fees and just let the Wongs pay what they owe.
The Wongs say they are happy they can stay put and are looking forward to the holidays.
